  • New Year's Day Bite

    Bill Roecker|Dec 15, 2013

"We got down to the Banks yesterday midday, " reported Excel skipper Justin Fleck January 1, 2014. "After bouncing around a little bit the fishing has been good. Most of the fish we're catching fish from 50 to 100 pounds. We got several fish in the 170 to 195-pound range, and we caught one Cow at 210 pounds yesterday afternoon. Anyway we're getting steady action, they started biting in the morning, and we usually have two or three hooked. The guys are having a good time, the weather is coming... Full story

  • Fish Tales From The West Coast

    Bill Roecker, www.FishingVideos.com|Jul 15, 2013

Bluefin Dive Long-range boats reporting from the bluefin area south of San Diego yesterday indicated bluefin fishing was tough at best. Some boats managed one or two fish per rod; others didn’t fare so well. There were reports indicating fishing was okay in the morning, but non-compliant in the afternoon. Skipper Andy Cates of Red Rooster III offered a typical report: “We started off good in the morning with a couple of stops on school size bluefin. We dropped the ball and spent the aft... Full story

  • San Diego Sport Fishing

    Bill Roecker, www.FishingVideos.com|Jul 15, 2013

Overview Windy weather and a morning-only bite foiled many boats going into the weekend, but a few managed to deck one or two tuna per rod out on the bluefin grounds. Some boats opted to fish for yellowtail, white seabass and halibut near islands. Here’s how Randy Toussaint of the Royal Star put it August 2: “We got off to a nice start with a grey bite for 40 bluefin but the rest of the day produced very little aside from a few flats (dorado) and small bluefin tuna. Overall, a down day for the... Full story

    Bill Roecker|Dec 15, 2012

There was a small crowd waiting when Justin Fleck backed Excel into the slip in front of Fisherman’s Landing Dec. 9 sometime around 4 a.m., and it rapidly grew until there looked to be several hundred folks clustered around the biggest yellowfin tuna ever caught. By 6 a.m., to say the place was a zoo might be understatement. The trip was a Braid charter to the Hurricane Bank with 22 anglers. The star of the event, electrician John Petruescu, was pinned to the dock rail by reporters, p...

  • PEI Prize --

    Bill Roecker|Sep 15, 2012

Contractor Ken Cirks spends a few days each fall fishing up in the Northeast. This year he was fishing out of North Lake, Prince Edward Island. I talked with Basil Pappas via telephone a few days ago, on September 7. Pappas remarked that Cirks was tucked into the corner of the boat at that very moment, working on a tuna of over 800 pounds. I’m assuming that the fish you see here is the same one. Here’s what Cirks sent along to me: “Hey guys, I’m just got back from another unbelievable trip to... Full story

  • San Diego - At The Docks

    Bill Roecker, FishingVideos.com & San Diego Sportfishing Council|Sep 15, 2012

Saturday, September 22 was a good day for trips returning from week-long trips. The four rigs that arrived in the morning had very good to excellent catches of mixed yellowtail, yellowfin and bluefin tuna, some chubby albacore and a few dorado. The Independence even had three wahoo in the catch. There were a few old-timers in the crowd to meet them. One of those was Charles Hunter a well-known jig fisherman not much seen for the past ten years. The catches were sweet, even exceptional. “Excellen... Full story
