There are just five months to go until the 9th annual Yellowtail Derby that start on April 29. The goal is to have over 200 of the best SoCal (and beyond) anglers in the competition. YELLOWTAIL TIME – The eighth annual Yellowtail Derby is set for Saturday, April 30 through Sunday, June 5. This premier fishing event out of San Diego offers a total of $30,000 in cash and prizes (based on 500 entries). The entry fee for all 36 days is, until March 15, $60; after that, it is $80. Last month two amazing fish were landed in our San Diego waters. A 50# Yellowtail was landed off La Jolla by angler Naum. The photo is by Victor Posada. Kayak angler, Brian Fagan, on Jan 28, landed a 74.2 # White Seabass off La Joll. It was weighed in at Dana Landing. This could be an IGFA line class World Record. This is a Pacific Blue Marlin weighed in at the Marlin Club at 662.2 #, 23 Sept 2015. This is a rare catch for this waters, they are generally found in warmer waters, but we have warm 74 to 78 degree water now and they are here because they are chasing their favorite food, which is dorado, and tuna. It is the largest Pacific Blue marlin weighed in San Diego dating back in The Marlin Club records to 1931. The 3/4 Day Boats found fish for our Derby anglers. Both Gary Glockzin and Katerina Eckert landed yellowtail, which qualify for the weekend prizes. Rick Maxa, fishing off North Mission Bch for Halibut and White Seabass on Monday afternoon saw birds working. He threw a jig out and landed his largest local yellowtail, which was hooked on a Salas 7x light. Rick brought the fish into Seaforth Sportfishing where it was weighed in by RC Newton at 45# 10 oz. The reception at the Fishing Clubs meetings during this month was very enthusiastic. Many new anglers have signed up for the 2015 contest. The excitement is building - just about a month and a half until the first day to fish and even less until the Pre-Fish Seminar and Party at the Bali Hai. The 1st Day, May 4, was beautiful, but precious few fish were landed. Saturday, the day before was over the top. Boat after boat came to the Shelter Island Ramp loaded with Big ‘Tails. Derby Angler, Carl Van Meter, was fishing Saturday, May 4, with his friend Bill on his boat Sea Goat at the Islands. They caught 5 “Big” tails, one weighed in at 37.5 after it was bleed and gutted. March 5th, Jennifer Nakatani, a San Diego Angler member, was introduced as the 33rd Miss Yellowtail Derby at the San Diego Angler's monthly meeting by Derby Director John Campbell. The 2013 Miss Yellowtail Derby, Chanelle Innis, presented Jennifer with the sash and a tiara; the tiara was first worn in 1963 by Kathy Harris. The 136 foot schooner now resides in the California Yacht Marina in Chula Vista. The South Bayfront Sailing Assoc., a non-profit, has purchased the classic two masted schooner from the Los Angeles Maritime Institute. The South Bayfront Assoc will use the schooner to provide sailing events and educational programs. She is certified to carry 30 passengers and 8 crewmen in open waters. Derby Anglers weighed in their catch from Mexican waters and Coastal San Diego. Fish were weighed in from 7# 7 oz to 58# 6oz. Here are a couple of shots of the winning fish and winning Team. Greg Trompass was the winner with the 54# 4oz white Seabass, they also had a 40+ Sht seabass and a 30# yellowtail. The bit is on in both the Coronados and La Jolla. The June 9 Awards party was at the Bali Hai Restaurant honored the best anglers. Marc Nunes of Point Loma was the overall Yellowtail (YT) winner with a 35# fish he caught off La Jolla on live bait. He was rewarded with $5,000 in cash and prizes and his weight in Ballast Point Pale Ale, measured by the Scale-O-Ale and witnessed by anglers and friends. This $1 Million dollar check from Mustad was awarded to Guy Yokum because he used a Mustad hook. Yokum was the first in 2012 to submit and get his world record fish on a Mustad hook. Capt Greg DiStefano, in the black baseball cap, drove the boat and trained the crew for the record. The $1 Million dollar award was the largest award ever for catching a fish.
