  • Falls In Stairways Caused Serious Injury

    The problem The NTSB recently investigated a vessel accident in which people were seriously injured when the vessel allided with the dock. Five stairways provided passenger access between three deck levels. As the vessel approached the pier, some passengers stood in stairways as they anticipated arrival. When the vessel unexpectedly struck the dock, passengers lost their balance and fell, causing head injuries, fractured ribs, and cuts and bruises.     Marine Safety Lessons Learned This is a reminder to owner operators that sometimes it is the most seemingly minor thing such as a mechanical part or electrical component that can lead to a catastrophe. For example, a nearly 20 year old bulker was leaving port when its main engine throttle failed. In this case the vessel was able to drop anchor without incident.     Southern Arizona's Monsoon Storms hit Cascabel and The Oasis...hard! Monday afternoon we experienced a storm with winds gusting to 60-80 mph and flooding rains which dropped over 4 inches in an hour. The Oasis was hard hit with flash flooding and downed trees. But the worst thing that happened was when our three-sided storage barn was literally torn apart!...  Website
