The wonderful thing about living in Arizona is that we have such a range of altitudes and ecosystems. When it's too cold up north, we can mess around in the desert, and when the desert is broiling, we can either keep cool at one of the desert reservoirs or head up to higher altitudes and enjoy cooler weather. In her article that features ten places to "Beat the Heat" during an Arizona summer, Margie Anderson notes that one of her favorites is Prescott and nearby Watson Lake. She says that although this lake has fewer trees -- and therefore less shade -- than the area's Lynx Lake, the boulders are spectacular. Arizona's boating season is in full swing and the Arizona Game and Fish Department geared up for it with life-jacket exchange stations at four of the state's lakes on May 16. The reception at the Fishing Clubs meetings during this month was very enthusiastic. Many new anglers have signed up for the 2015 contest. The excitement is building - just about a month and a half until the first day to fish and even less until the Pre-Fish Seminar and Party at the Bali Hai. Willie Schultz, a graduate of Arizona State University and now a resident of Ketchikan, Ala., is a marathon swimmer who trained for ocean swimming in La Jolla, Calif. The 1st Day, May 4, was beautiful, but precious few fish were landed. Saturday, the day before was over the top. Boat after boat came to the Shelter Island Ramp loaded with Big ‘Tails. Derby Angler, Carl Van Meter, was fishing Saturday, May 4, with his friend Bill on his boat Sea Goat at the Islands. They caught 5 “Big” tails, one weighed in at 37.5 after it was bleed and gutted. March 5th, Jennifer Nakatani, a San Diego Angler member, was introduced as the 33rd Miss Yellowtail Derby at the San Diego Angler's monthly meeting by Derby Director John Campbell. The 2013 Miss Yellowtail Derby, Chanelle Innis, presented Jennifer with the sash and a tiara; the tiara was first worn in 1963 by Kathy Harris.
