As we began 2016, heavy rains were predicted for San Diego and Arizona. Anticipation of rising water sheds appear to be in our future for Arizona lakes especially on the Salt River lakes chain. Meanwhile, the offshore water current temperatures hold and numbers of 15-30 pound yellow tail are being reported at H&M Landing from the ½- and ¾-day boats. The offshore fishing season took the Christmas holiday week off but we’re at it once again; it continues! The El Niño currently causing mayhem arou... Full story
It's been 100 years! Well, almost. But, this summer it will be.. On Aug. 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill that created the National Park Service. And, Arizona has benefitted greatly from this; our state boasts four national parks and 22 national monuments, historic sites, recreation areas, and memorials. In addition to the premier attraction, Grand Canyon National Park, three other natural gems in Arizona are Petrified Forest National Park, Saguaro National Park, and Tumacacori N... Full story
I review hundreds of products over the course of the year and few have the "WOW" factor this one does. In today's society, personal security is on everyone's mind. Choosing a hand gun for personal protection certainly is a matter of individual choice, and I personally choose the Colt Combat Elite Series 80, 1911 .45ACP. One problem, though, with the Colt 1911 and other quality hand guns is they don't have a factor rail system for the addition of lights and lasers. Being a regular customer at... Full story
The evolution of the lead spoons or flat falls continues with local Striper Guide Derrick Franks, aka The Striper Snatcher. I told you previously of the 3" jig very effective in fresh and saltwater. Well he's taken the lure to the next level, with the 5", 130 gram version with high performance Daiichi saltwater hooks. The jigs performance on the fall is more erratic than any I ever seen or used. Like the 3" version, the Snatcher has standard colors and has the ability to custom finish with your... Full story

We spoke in August 2015 that El Niño is "significant and strengthening," and could rival the strongest on record - even the Super El Niño of 1997. Perhaps there will be more and bigger fish and much-need precipitation this winter from the West Coast. Well it did and has, so did the fishing. As the sportfishing season comes to a close, let me clarify, the anglers are not as enthusiastic about going fishing now as earlier in the season. We're all used to the fish bailing out of the area and we g... Full story
Local Striper Guide Derrick Franks, aka "The Striper Snatcher," is going big with a line of lead jigs. It all started this season in San Diego aboard the Malihini sport fishing vessel, fishing ¾-day trips. Franks took a knife to the gun fight. Day one, freshwater bass jig rod vs. yellow fin tuna -yep, the tuna won the fight. Day two, re-armed with a tuna rod, Frank lands yellow fin tuna. During the process, we had conversation on air about using the same swim baits, spoons irons and jigs... Full story
This summer the comment was that El Niño is "significant and strengthening," and that it could rival the strongest on record - even the Super El Niño of 1997. The prediction was that perhaps it would bring more and bigger fish and much-need precipitation this winter from the West Coast. Well, it did and has. Look at this catch - it leaves little doubt that it's a great season to go sportfishing! Expected is another fish wave working up the Baja coast in the warm water. Don McDowell says he e... Rule 13, if it has no shoulders or eyebrows, don't mess with it! Captain Jared Stubbs, Sea Tow San Diego, reported rumors of a poisonous sea snake washing ashore in Southern California. Since, sources from Heal the Bay has confirmed that the exotic and incredibly venomous sea snake has been spotted off the Oxnard coast line. The sea snake, Pelamis platurus, approximately 2-feet in length and more commonly known as the yellow-bellied sea snake, was found at the Silver Strand Beach in Oxnard,... Full story
A bomb-sniffing combat dog named Mike survived two tours of duty in Iraq but not the streets of a bucolic little town in Wyoming. The 9-year-old Belgian Malinois was shot and killed in Powell last Saturday by a bicyclist who said he was attacked, leaving Mike’s devastated owner Matthew Bessler, a retired Army Ranger, wondering how he is going to deal with his combat-related injuries alone. “I raised him as a puppy, and the ability he has to sense some of the issues that I have with sei... The San Diego-based sport fishing continues to boat good numbers of blue fin, yellow fin, yellow tail and dorado within U.S. waters. The anglers are coming, the boats are going, and the fish are biting. Solid numbers of migratory tuna are being caught on ¾ and one-day and multi-day trips. Blue and yellow fin in the 20-30-pounds class are hanging close to the California coast. Abruptly in the middle of the average-sized “fins’” bite, the mayhem erupts with 100-200 pounds-grade yellow and blue fin... Full story
