The Arizona Game and Fish Department is advising migratory waterfowl hunters that access at Berry Road, on the southeast end of Mormon Lake off FH 3 or Lake Mary Road, will be open for this year's waterfowl hunting season. The Community Fishing Program resumed stocking catfish in the core waters in mid-September. Two trucks serviced the Phoenix and Tucson areas from two separate ponds in Arkansas. Unfortunately, one of those ponds had weaker-than-normal fish, and following the stocking, we had reports of mortalities from almost all of the Phoenix-area waters at various levels. A few years ago I was on the lake and had the bad luck to have my engine quit. Nothing I tried would get the engine to run. I had also not thought to bring oars or a paddle. I used my hands and an empty tackle box to try to paddle to the shore. Fortunately a fellow boater spotted me and towed me back. Striper fishing has settled into a predictable pattern over the length of Lake Powell. Each morning striper schools come to the surface chasing shad schools. The trigger is first light which makes shad form into tight schools following a night of happy wandering as individuals.
