The year 2020 saw a lot of people venturing into the outdoors for the first time. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, this past year 6.2 million new shooters took up the sport. There was also a spike in camping and other outdoor activities. Some people were afraid to gather together inside, but outside is a different matter. If you are one of the newbies, I hope you continue to enjoy the outdoors this year and for many years to come. Many Good Reasons There are a lot of good... Full story

  • Fall Flush: Quail Season 2020

    Doug Burt|Dec 1, 2020

Doug Burt - AZGFD Hunting/Shooting Sports Manager (R3) Nothing says "Arizona" more than the desert quail. The iconic "topknot" of the Gambel's quail, and the distinguishable "ka-KAA-ka-ka" chorus of their calls are unmistakable. Not to mention the cartoonish way they run. Clever Quail But to the hunter who has pursued them, they lose their cuteness quickly. That funny run through densely brushed desert, can be at times - infuriating. Pick one thing bird, either fly or run, not both. The cute... Full story

  • No Ammo? No Problem!

    John Anderson|Aug 1, 2020

If you have tried to buy any ammunition lately, you already know that shelves are bare. Buying online is just as trying: I've put a couple boxes in my cart on the Cabelas website, and before I could check out, they were already out of stock. Ditto on other websites: page after page of "out of stock" messages on almost every kind and caliber of pistol ammo. The only thing I've found on the shelves lately is bird shot, rifle ammo, and tracers. So odds are, even if you want to get a little practice... Full story

  • Tips, Tricks, Gadgets For Pistols

    John Anderson|Feb 1, 2020

In the movies, the heroes only have problems with their firearms if it suits the plot. In real life, I've taken a lot of classes and gone to a lot of ranges, and believe me, if you have problems, you're not alone. As you get older, the sights may be harder to see and racking the slide can get harder to do as well. You don't even have to be older – many smaller people or those with handicaps or just weak hands also have trouble doing things like racking the slide, reloading, locking the slide b... Full story

  • Gun Talk

    John Anderson|Jul 1, 2019

There isn't much hunting going on this month, and it's a bit warm to go out shooting (unless you pay for an indoor range), but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be training. This is a great time for dry-fire practice, mental conditioning, close-quarters combat training, indoor-range time, classes, and research on legal matters. This is also a good time to check your concealed-carry permit to see if it needs to be renewed soon. Dry-Fire Practice Dry-fire practice is simply practicing with an... Full story

  • Non-Lethal Weapons

    John Anderson|Jun 1, 2019

There are many situations that probably don't require a lethal response. A dog attacking your dog as you walk, for instance, or some guy with road rage who isn't armed but is still intent on punching you out. There are also a lot of situations that make you feel anxious even if no one is attacking you: walking through a deserted parking garage at night for example, or walking back to your car at night when no one else is around. You probably wouldn't want to have a gun in your hand for those... Full story

  • Back-Up / Secondary Weapons

    John Anderson|May 1, 2019

If you have a concealed carry permit and carry a weapon regularly, have you ever considered carrying a back-up weapon? Not just a knife or a tactical pen or a monkey fist, but a secondary firearm? I've heard lots of reasons why you would want to have a second gun on you, and I've also heard plenty of reasons why people don't want to carry a second handgun. Let's look at both sides before discussing what type of secondary weapon to choose and where you might carry it. Pros Guns sometimes... Full story
