The Community Fishing Program resumed stocking catfish in the core waters in mid-September. Two trucks serviced the Phoenix and Tucson areas from two separate ponds in Arkansas. Unfortunately, one of those ponds had weaker-than-normal fish, and following the stocking, we had reports of mortalities from almost all of the Phoenix-area waters at various levels. The Arizona Game and Fish Department's 2014 Outdoor Expo and Friday Youth Day drew a combined 48,000 attendees, the highest three-day total in the event's history. The weekend Outdoor Expo, held March 29-30 at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, was visited by 41,000 people. Sunday's attendance of 20,700 was a record for an Expo Sunday. ONE OF THE FIRST -- Kiwanis Park was among the first few parks to join the Community Fishing Program (CFP) back in 1984, just after Chaparral Park. This lovely park in Tempe has a 13-acre lake with several ramadas for anglers to stay in the shade while fishing. This park has a large playground and swimming pool, and seasonally you can rent a paddleboat and float around the lake. All lakes were stocked again with channel catfish the week of Sept. 30 – Oct. 5. Fishing for catfish is good to excellent now that the fall stockings have resumed. The Sept. 19 stocking was loaded with incentive-size catfish in the 3-8 pound range. Mornings and evenings are the best times because catfish prefer to feed under dim or dark conditions.
