  • Gear Up For Hunting Season

    John Anderson|Oct 1, 2022

I hope you got drawn for something this year, but even if you didn't there are plenty of opportunities to get out in the field this fall. Margie and I didn't get a tag, but we plan to spend some time out at Desert Creek Sportsman's Club shooting pheasants and chukar, plus we'll be out hunting for quail and grouse with Mochi. Not to mention waterfowl and snipe seasons just around the corner! There are also some big-game hunts that don't require a tag. Check the October Hunt Calendar or the... Full story

  • AZGFD Asks Hunters To Report Harvest Anomalies

    AZGFD|Oct 1, 2022

Nature isn't perfect. If a hunter spends enough time in the field, there's a chance he or she, at some point, might harvest an animal that appears to be sick or deformed, or looks suspect during the field-dressing process. While oddities are few and far between, and rarely present any cause for concern - especially when it comes to turning that harvest into delicious table fare - hunters are being encouraged to let a wildlife health specialist at the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD)... Full story

  • Dove Season

    Margie Anderson|Sep 1, 2022

Don't forget that there is no limit and not even a season on Eurasian collared doves. You can shoot them any time, as many as you want. They can be hard to find outside of town, though, which is the biggest hurdle. Eurasian collared-doves are bigger than white-winged or mourning doves, and they are much lighter in color. They've got dark wing tips and a square tail. When doves are flying in, you'll notice the tails much more easily than color, especially early in the morning when the light is... Full story

  • Dove Season Outlook

    AZGFD|Aug 1, 2022

Opening day is Thursday, Sept. 1 Arizona’s dove hunters should have no complaints when the 2022 season opens Sept. 1. All signs indicate that there will be birds aplenty, particularly for those hunters who are willing to scout in the mornings and evenings between now and the opener to locate some good hunting spots. Once again, the greatest number of doves — and dove hunters — will be concentrated in the state’s agricultural areas, particularly those that produce small-grain crops like wheat,... Full story

Sure, there have been birds for hunters who were willing to get out and climb the hills and canyons of southeastern Arizona when the season opened in early December for Mearns' quail. But the fact remains that it's going to take more than one summer of decent monsoon rains to give populations a desperately needed boost and improve lagging harvest rates.
