Times Spent Outdoors: Priceless!
Private Boaters Prevail; Good Anglers Score In Two Divisions
The early June awards party at the Bali Hai Restaurant, San Diego, honored the best anglers of the 2013 International Yellowtail Derby.
Marc Nunes of Point Loma was the overall Yellowtail (YT) winner with a 35-pound fish he caught off La Jolla on live bait. He was rewarded with $5,000 in cash and prizes and his weight in Ballast Point Pale Ale, measured by the Scale-O-Ale and witnessed by anglers and friends.
Second place was Greg Trompas, with a 32-pound, 5-ounce YT and also was in third place in white seabass (WSB) at 59 pounds, 4 ounces.
Neil Barbour scored third place YT with a 31 pounder, and he won the WSB division with his 62-pound, 8-ounce fish landed off of Point Loma.
James Shelby came in second in WSB with a 58-pound, 6-ounce fish he landed off Imperial Beach.
Virtually all of the success came from and awards went to private boaters. The kayakers and the open party fleet only managed a few smaller fish.
The awards party was sponsored by the Bali Hai Restaurant and Ballast Point Brewery. John Cassidy was the emcee; he had just arrived the previous morning from the first two-day trip on the new CHIEF (former Big Game 90) that limited out on yellowtail for its 28 passengers.
The 2014 Intl Yellowtail Derby dates were announced by Derby Director John Campbell. It will be again be a 35-day contest: May 4 to June 8, 2014 with the kick-off party set for May 1 at the Bali Hai Restaurant, Point Loma.
