Dragons Will Roar In Tempe

Who would have thought that dragon boat racing, with its roots in southern China as an ancient folk ritual for the past 2,000 years, would find its way to a modern, man-made lake in the middle of the Arizona desert? Since emerging in modern times as an international sports event in Hong Kong in 1976, dragon boat racing has spread throughout the world.

Join the Arizona Dragon Boat Association on Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30 for two days of exciting dragon boat competition with teams from all over the United States and beyond.( Practices are required for all paddlers on Saturday, March 15 and 22 ).

The excitement will be at Tempe Town Lake and Tempe Beach Park, 550 E. Tempe Town Lake, Tempe, AZ 85281.

A dragon boat is a very long and narrow human powered boat used in the team paddling sport of dragon boat racing which originated in China. It may also be known as Dragon boating. While competition has taken place annually for more than 20 centuries as part of folk ritual, it emerged in modern times as an international "sport" in Hong Kong in 1976. Like running, horse racing and marksmanship, the racing of dragon boats is among mankind's oldest organized competitions.
